Texas Tech has fired football coach Matt Wells after four seasons in Lubbock. The Red Raiders went 5-7 this season, their second losing season under Wells.

Wells compiled a 13-17 overall record at Texas Tech

Wells was hired by Texas Tech in 2019 after spending six seasons as the head coach at Utah State. He led the Aggies to a 44-23 record, including a 10-2 mark in 2018.

Wells' tenure at Texas Tech was marked by inconsistency. The Red Raiders went 4-8 in his first season, 4-6 in 2020 and 7-6 in 2021. They were 0-3 in bowl games under Wells.

Texas Tech is expected to begin a national search for a new coach immediately

Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt is expected to begin a national search for a new coach immediately. Several potential candidates have been mentioned, including former Baylor coach Art Briles and former Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin.

Whoever is hired will have their work cut out for them. Texas Tech has not won a Big 12 championship since 1995 and has not been to a major bowl game since 2009.
