GIFs: A Comprehensive Guide

What Are GIFs?

Graphics Interchange Format (GIF), pronounced "jif," is a bitmap image format that supports animation. Unlike JPEG and PNG, GIF images are made up of a series of individual frames. This allows you to create animated images that can loop continuously.

GIFs vs. Other File Types

  • JPEG: JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a lossy compression format that is commonly used for photographs and other static images. JPEG images are smaller in file size than GIFs, but they can lose some image quality in the compression process.
  • PNG: PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless compression format that is commonly used for web graphics and icons. PNG images are larger in file size than GIFs, but they maintain the full image quality.
  • GIF: GIFs are a trade-off between JPEG and PNG. They are smaller in file size than PNG, but they can lose some image quality due to the animation.
