Shark Attacks on the Rise
Hit-and-Run Attacks
In hit-and-run attacks, the shark inflicts a small laceration on the victim, swims away, and never returns. This is the most common type of shark attack, the least dangerous, and usually involves surfers.
Why Surfers Are More at Risk
Surfers are more likely to be attacked by sharks for two reasons. First, they spend more time in the ocean than the average human. Second, surfboards, particularly high-performance ones, can resemble seals or other prey animals that sharks target.
Growing White Shark Populations
According to Gavin Naylor of the University of Florida, the increase in white shark attacks is probably due to growing populations, particularly in areas where seals are the main food source.
Human-Shark Interactions on Long Island
An uptick in human-shark interactions has been occurring on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean off Long Island, New York. The increased activity has forced beaches to close as surfers and swimmers stay out of the water.
